A certificate in three steps

How it works in detail →
  1. Enter your domain

For example example.com together with www.example.com. Choose how you'll prove the domain is yours: with a file on the server or a DNS record.

  2. Prove the domain is yours

We'll show you which file to upload or which record to add, with a “Copy” button next to every value.

  3. Download and install

You get the private key and the certificate. Upload them following the guide for your hosting. In about two months we'll remind you to renew.

Who it's for

You have shared hosting

With cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, Hostinger or OVHcloud. You upload two or three files in the control panel.

Guides for hosting panels →

You have your own server

A VPS or dedicated server with nginx or Apache. You copy the files to the server and point the configuration at them.

Guide for your own server →

You have a NAS at home or at work

Synology or QNAP under your own domain, even without opening port 80, thanks to DNS record verification.

Guides for NAS devices →

You see everything this site sends

Your private key is created in your browser. The generator connects to only three addresses, and you can watch every connection live in the log next to it.

Frequently asked questions

All questions →
What is an SSL certificate and why do I need one?

An SSL certificate (strictly speaking, TLS) lets your site open over https://. It encrypts the connection between the visitor's browser and the server and confirms that the site really runs on that domain. Without it, browsers mark the site as “Not secure”, and data from forms, such as a contact or login form, travels across the internet as plain text. More in our guide to SSL certificates.

Is a free certificate worse than a paid one?

The encryption is the same. A Let's Encrypt certificate confirms control of the domain (DV type), just like the cheapest paid certificates, and works in all popular browsers. Paid OV and EV certificates also check company details, but browsers show the same padlock for them. The difference is validity: a Let's Encrypt certificate has to be renewed about every two months, which is why we send you an email reminder.

Is it safe?

Yes. The private key is created in your browser (Web Crypto API) and is never sent anywhere. The certificate is issued by Let's Encrypt, a non-profit certificate authority used by millions of websites around the world. This site is only a tool for talking to Let's Encrypt.
